Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures. It involves using implants or fat transfer to increase the size of the breasts, address asymmetry or address lost breast volume after pregnancy or weight loss. Implants can be placed under or above the muscle, and surgery is performed via an incision placed in the breast crease under the breast.

Breast augmentation using implants can be designed to achieve a variety of changes, including:

  • increasing breast volume
  • addressing skin laxity
  • addressing asymmetry

Each breast augmentation surgery, as with all invasive surgical procedures, has its own set of risks. You should not have a breast augmentation with implants unless you have had a thorough consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon and understand and accept the risks associated with the procedure.

Breast Implant Surgery Options

Choosing the right breast implant will vary from person to person. Dr Greensmith offers a range of implant options. Some of the types of implants offered by used by include the following:

  • Silicone round implants.
  • Silicone teardrop (anatomic-shaped) implants.
  • Nano-surface smooth implants or Microtextured Anatomic or round

You can discuss your options in detail with Dr. Greensmith at your consultation to decide which implant is right for you.

Dr Greensmith customises his breast implant surgery advice on implant size and shape according to each patient’s wishes. Dr Greensmith incorporates an internal bra suture support technique, to help prevent implant malposition. In addition, Dr Greensmith almost always incorporates fat grafting with breast procedures.

Dr Greensmith will advise what he considers an appropriate range of options for your particular aims, tissues, and dimensions. He will spend time with you to try a range of implant sizes and shapes to help you decide on a suitable breast size for your requirements. It is vital that you take the time to weigh your options carefully before any surgery to make the right choices about your surgical plan and breast size.

Breast Lift Surgery (Mastopexy)

If you want to increase breast volume and have concerns about breast ptosis, then you have the option of having a breast lift, also known as mastopexy, at the same time as the placement of breast implants or frequently as a staged procedure.

If done as one stage, this is called breast augmentation-mastopexy (implants combined with a breast lift). The most common indication for wanting this combined augmentation-mastopexy surgery is for upper fullness and to address skin tone that has been lost after pregnancy and breastfeeding. When done as a staged procedure, the first stage involves lifting and slightly REDUCING volume before an implant augmentation, which is done at a second stage 6-12 months later.
