Otoplasty is surgery to reshape and often set back prominent ears

Dr Greensmith is an aesthetic ear specialist and performs the surgery to address concerns about excessively prominent ears in adults of all ages and children over 7 years of age. Medicare and private health insurance rebates apply up until 18 years of age. The procedure is called “setback otoplasty/correction of prominent ears” and involves setting the ears back closer to the head.

Dr Greensmith takes great care to avoid overcorrection and pioneered a world-renowned method called “WiFi” Otoplasty that adds reliability when it comes to results. This technique was published in the prestigious British Journal of Plastic Surgery ( J Plast Reconstr Aesthet Surg 2018 Jun;71(6):900-905.

The ‘WiFi’ otoplasty: Combined concentric posterior microchondrectomies and sutures for correction of prominent ears Greensmith, A et al )

This makes the ears less prominent and appear smaller. Dr Greensmith’s method hides the scar by placing it in the groove behind the ear. Surgery is often performed as a day surgery procedure and patients have completed most of their healing in a few weeks. Other types of otoplasty are also requested, such as ear reduction for “Macrotia” ( large ears ) and involve a variation of his otoplasty method.

What is the best age for ear surgery (otoplasty)

Our ears reach adult size by about 6 years of age, and Dr Greensmith recommends that usually, it is beneficial to wait to perform surgery until after 7 years of age when the ear has largely finished growing, and the cartilage that needs reshaping has adequate strength for surgical reshaping. However, the child must be desiring the surgery and involved in the decision making process along with the parents. Many children do not request surgery until 9-10 years of age

Risks and Complications of Otoplasty

Risks
All surgery has risks – no matter who performs the surgery. When surgery is performed by a trained and experienced plastic surgeon there will be measures and precautions put in place to help lower the risk of complications occurring. This, combined with Dr Greensmith’s over 20 years of experience, means that the chance of complications is very low. During the consultation, Dr Greensmith will explain the possible risks of your surgery so that you can make an informed decision.

  • All patients are likely to experience some temporary discomfort/pain, numbness or altered sensation around the incisions or operated areas; bruising and swelling; skin discolouration; lumpiness, tightness, fatigue, low spirits; and nausea – typically from the anaesthetics or pain killers, which may require treatment.
  • General risks of surgery include wound infection, haematoma (collection of blood under the skin), abnormal scarring or internal scar tissue ( including keloid or hypertrophic scars ), asymmetries, bleeding from the incisions, allergies or reactions to anaesthetic agents, medications, sutures or topical treatments, delayed healing or separation of wound edges.
  • Risks of anesthesia include tooth damage; heart attack; pneumonia; blood clots in the leg or lung, and stroke These are exceedingly uncommon but could be life-threatening. These conditions up till now have not occurred in Dr Greensmith’s practicing career.
